The Alphabetic Principle

The alphabetic principle states that spoken words are made up of sounds (phonemes) that are represented in written form (letters). Through phonemic awareness training, the brain stores the sounds of the letters.

Many children first learn to recognize the letter symbols, that is, their ABCs, called graphemes. Identifying the sounds that each of the letters represent is the next step in learning to read. The words in the “Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners,” the poem earlier in this chapter, are just some of the many that cause brain problems for English learners. Remember that the brain remembers patterns, so words such as dead and bead often confuse new readers.
